Locci Gabriella
Gabriella was born in Cagliari, where she studied art and currently lives and works.
Engaged in experimentation, she is an important point of reference for the renewal and
redefinition of engraving languages.
She is committed to experimenting with visual arts and focuses on the opportunities for
innovation in the engraving language by using experimental engraving techniques without
mixing them together. She prefers large formats capable of revolutionising the long-
established relationship between signs and space on the sheets. Signs and space also
relate to the architectural space and its symbolic meanings: the engraving process
becomes architecture, object and installation.
The common thread in her works is Time - of the mind, of processing and realisation -
which defines the spaces in which it operates but is also Memory. In her works, Art and
Architecture share points of view on the themes of space, form and content.
She has conducted urban space redevelopment projects, commissioned by public bodies
(Municipality of Cagliari and Municipality of Quartu S. Elena). She was a member of the
“Interdisciplinary Group of Research and Experimentation” at the Department of
Mathematical Sciences of the University of Cagliari. She was a lecturer at the IED in
Cagliari. She founded Casa Falconieri - centre of experimentation and research through
which she promotes innovative technical and conceptual methods of engraving languages.
She has represented the Italian Ministry of Culture in the Fondazione Teatro Lirico di
Cagliari.
She has held workshops, lectures and round tables in Spain (Fuendetodos, Faculty of Fine
Arts of Cuenca, Reina Sofia Museum - Jean Nouvel’s Auditorium - in Madrid) and in Italy
(Civic Museums of Cagliari, San Michele Castle, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture
of the University of Cagliari, Faculty of Architecture in Alghero).
She took part in the 54th Venice Biennial and on that occasion, the MAN Museum of
Nuoro, under the direction of Cristiana Collu, dedicated a exhibition to her describing her
artistic career. In 2012 she was an artist invited to Dresden for the Ostrale Internationale
Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Künste.
With Dario Piludu she created the F.I.G. Festival in Bilbao and the ON PAPER project. In
2018, her activity of spreading the ideals of innovation and systematic research led to her
involvement in the “XIX Jornadas de conservacion” - at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid,
where she gave a lecture entitled “Grabado / Conservacion / Como coleccionar con
felicidad”.
Her recent works increasingly take on the appearance of performances that unfold in large
spaces (sea, streets and gardens), where the artist involves people by guiding them within
her installation in a participatory art operation.
She has exhibited her works in institutions and museums such as: Museum of Fine Arts of
Bilbao, Visual Arts Centre/Barro Museum of Asuncion, MAN Museum of Nuoro, Civic
Museums of Cagliari, MACC Contemporary Art Museum in Calasetta, National Auditorium
of Madrid, Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Villa Croce Museum in Genoa, La Fenice
Theatre in Venice, Palazzo Sormani in Milan, Masedu in Sassari, Fondazione di
Sardegna in Sassari, Promotrice delle Belle Arti in Turin.
